Academic Certificate in Mathematics and Statistics

https://www.uniupo.it/it/corsi/certificazione-accademica/academic-certificate-mathematics-and-statistics

The Academic Certificate is designed to introduce some basic elements of discreet mathematics, logic, mathematical analysis, probability and statistics.
Specifically, it introduces the language of sets and basic set operations, linear systems, vectors, matrices and related operations. It introduces some basic concepts of logic, syntax and semantics of propositional and first order logic.
Some basic elements of mathematical analysis are presented, such as the ideas of functions, limits, derivatives and integrals. Also, the fundamental rules of probability are taught, including the notion of conditioned probability, Bayes Theorem and its applications, with random variables, discreet and continuous, univariate and multivariate, and corresponding indexes (mean, variance, covariance). Some basic concepts of statistics are included (data groups, mean, median, quartiles, samples, expected values, estimate of parameters and results checking).

Educational Goals

The student will be able to use basic methods of discreet mathematics, logic, mathematical analysis, probability and statistics, as listed above. Specifically, he/she will acquire the ability to: represent sets that satisfy properties, resolve linear systems and use vectors and matrices to represent data. The student will recognise the logical structure of mathematical reasoning and the equivalence of statements, and confidently use connectors and quantifiers.  He/she will learn to recognise the development of elementary functions and the geometric significance of derivatives and integrals, and apply this knowledge to resolving simple problems, knowledge of fundamental data structures and the ability to use them to resolve simple problems. He/she must be able to analyse simple random experiments, using the main probability distributions to model simple phenomena, representing and describing the data clearly, resolving simple statistics problems by calculating point estimates and confidence intervals, and correctly performing the main hypothesis tests.

Course assessment

Assessment of course success and achievement of goals is given in a grade (thirty marks) for each training activity of the course.
On request and subject to payment of a revenue stamp, a certificate of course success and acquisition of credits may be issued.
It is possible to take the exams until the special session of the academic year.

Enrolment

To participate in the course, applicants must hold a high school leaving certificate or other equivalent, recognised, qualification from abroad.
Applications must be presented between 2 May 2023 and 31 January 2024.

For any questions about enrolment, please contact prof. Alessio Bottrighi
