Who we are

We, the UPO (University of Piemonte Orientale), were founded as a State University in 1998, though our history dates back to the 13th century, when a “Studium generale” was established in Vercelli.

We are a young, competitive multi-campus, the only university in the region of Eastern Piedmont. Multi-campus means widespread territoriality, plurality, diversity: a distinctive feature of our university in the Italian higher education system.

Our multi-campus structure embracing the cities of Alessandria, Novara and Vercelli, gives an identity to this territory, which is an excellent site for pioneering companies and networking organisations.

We are proud to be the primary platform of social mobility; the 80% of our graduates come from families where a higher degree is earned for the first time by one of its members. We allow families to meet the challenges of modern times and to prepare their children to face our globalized world.

Some 12,000 students, 400 professors and researchers, 300 employees are the figures of our University, whose teaching activities and scientific research almost cover the full range of knowledge.
