Full and part-time courses

Generally, courses entail full-time attendance and study.

Are you a student who also work? Do you have family commitments? Or do you think you need more time than usual to graduate? Think about the possibility of part-time study: this allows you to extend your studies over a greater number of years.

You can sign up for an undergraduate degree taken over 4 or 6 years or a Master’s degree over 3 or 4 years. If you are registering for your first year, you can choose your study regime during the enrolment procedure. If you are registering for second year or beyond, the part-time contract is available in the section Forms for students.

The part-time study contract is available on the university website, in the “Forms for Students” section.

There are some cases in which it is not possible to choose or change study regime to part-time:

  1. registration for single cycle Master’s degrees and all courses in the School of Medicine and Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences (except for the bachelor's degree program in Biotechnology, which also includes a 4-year part-time commitment)
  2. registration already carried out for courses where the first year of study is no longer active
  3. Registration as off-track students or when repeating a year

In these cases, only regime changes which involve a reduction in course duration are allowed.

Choosing a part-time study regime involves signing a specific contract with Student Services, agreeing to these conditions:

  1. not to exceed the limit of credits
  2. Not to finish the programme before the scheduled deadline

With part-time courses, students must collect academic credits (CFUs) according to these terms:

  1. students who enrol on a 3-year undergraduate programme and select the part-time option of 4 years must not exceed 135 academic credits by the end of the third year of the course. The remaining credits must be collected in the fourth year. This limit may be extended up to a maximum of 145 credits for didactic reasons linked to the course structure.
  2. students who enrol on a 3-year undergraduate programme and select the part-time option of 6 years must not exceed 90 academic credits by the end of the third year of the course. The remaining credits must be collected during the next three years. This limit may be extended up to a maximum of 100 credits for didactic reasons linked to the course structure.
  3. students who enrol on a Master’s degree programme and select the part-time study option of 3 years must not exceed 90 academic credits by the end of the second year of the course. The remaining credits must be collected in the third year. This limit may be extended up to a maximum of 100 credits for didactic reasons linked to the course structure.
  4. students who enrol on a Master’s degree programme and select the part-time study option of 4 years must not exceed 60 academic credits by the end of the second year of the course. The remaining credits must be collected in the following two years. This limit may be extended up to a maximum of 70 credits for didactic reasons linked to the course structure.

If the time frame or number of credits is not respected, or if you wish to change your selected regime (exclusively during the registration period), follow these steps:

  1. If you exceed the credit limits stated above, you must pay the fee amounts established for full-time students for every year of enrolment (even those already completed)
  2. It is possible to change your study regime from part-time to full-time up to the third year of a 3-year undergraduate course and up to the second year of a Master’s programme. At the moment of registration, you will pay the difference in fees for the previous years.
  3. You can change your regime from full-time to part-time, excluding courses where the first year is not active. In this case, you have no right to any reimbursement for fees paid previously.
  4. If you do not finish your course in the time frame established in your contract, you must pay the full-time fee for every additional year of enrolment.

If you register for part-time study, you must pay a fee which is proportionate to the full-time cost, according to this table:
