Course overview

The degree in Environment Management and Sustainable Development (aka GASS) is aimed at all students who are interested in the environment and human-nature interaction, in order to promote sustainable development that can tackle and resolve complex problems in this field.
Students who opt for a degree dealing with these topics are looking for a course that nourishes their passion in environmental conservation, the fight against climate change and sustainable development in all aspects of society and industry. Also, such students are seeking to acquire specific and complementary skills to help in the transition towards sustainable development models in all economic activity.
The degree programme sets out to offer an educational grounding that allows a career in environment protection; sustainable management and awareness of natural resources; the transformation of production processes according to the principles of the circular economy; and development and promotion of company eco-strategies. It also allows students to continue with higher education and research.
The degree programme requires basic knowledge in the comprehension and use of scientific language, including mathematical notations and representations as laid down by the National Guidelines for high schools.
The main goal of the course is to supply specific specialist knowledge in the field of sustainability, providing job opportunities by satisfying the needs of the labour market and the personal interests of students in a transdisciplinary programme. To complete this course successfully, students will be introduced to various subjects and cultural environments. Particular attention has been paid in the course design to ensure, from the first year onwards, the study of all subjects – mathematics, physics, chemistry, earth sciences, biology, and law, economics and medical studies. This allows the development of a transdisciplinary approach and problem-solving in a holistic manner. The courses themselves, where possible, are marked by a transdisciplinary design, involving teachers from a variety of scientific fields.

  • Multi/transdisciplinary: skill in analysis of environmental systems and problem-solving regarding the eco-system with a multi/transdisciplinary approach, exploiting skills and research in an integrated manner throughout the entire programme
  • Many integrated courses, which tackle the issues of sustainable development from various perspectives – scientific, economic, legal, and health; climate change, biodiversity, environmental impact assessment, law and economics of development, territorial planning and health
  • Practical: the courses have an experimental approach thanks to lab work and analysis of case studies, with events and field trips led by teachers.
  • Strong ties with companies and organisations working in the field of sustainability:
  • Cooperation with external professionals (entrepreneurs, managers, etc) and co-presence of teachers from various sectors
  • Analysis of sustainable issues is at the heart of all coursework and all activities are closely linked to the 17 sustainable development goals listed in the United Nations 2030 Agenda; in this way, students are provided with appropriate tools to tackle the issue, in both theory and practice, in a transdisciplinary manner.
  • This course provides real knowledge and know-how about sustainability with a holistic approach to culture and learning.

The course prepares graduates who can provide consultancy and support services to public and private organisations wishing to pursue a sustainable approach.
