The University Corridors for Refugees (UNICORE) project, started in 2019 with an initial pilot phase during which six students were hosted by two Italian universities with the support of UNHCR (UN Refugee Agency), and then expanded to involve a growing number of universities and students. Today, UNHCR with: forty-one Italian universities, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Caritas Italiana, Diaconia Valdese, Centro Astalli and other partners, will give 61 refugees the opportunity to pursue their academic career in Italy.

The project, offers the opportunity to arrive in Italy safely and regularly to pursue university studies in line with UNHCR's goal of strengthening regular entry channels for refugees and achieving a 15% enrolment rate in tertiary education programmes in countries of first asylum and third countries by 2030.

Today, the project is in its sixth edition and is aimed at refugees living in Kenya, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Students will be selected on the basis of merit and motivation through a public call for applications launched on 1 March 2024.

A wide network of local partners, including the Arcidiocesi of Vercelli, Caritas Diocesana di Vercelli, the Methodist Church of Vercelli and Novara, and the Ente Regionale per il Diritto allo Studio Universitario del Piemonte (EDISU Piemonte), will ensure the necessary support for the students during the two-year master's degree programme and will foster their integration into university life.

It will be possible to apply from Friday 1 March 2024 on the UNHCR website.

The closing date of the call for applications is 15 April 2024.
